Rob’s pick: While there’s a good chance that any franchise might spawn a metroidvania spin-off, Pac-Man is one of the more unlikely candidates for an explorational offshoot. This week, Shadow Labyrinth takes classic coin-op and turns it into a moody, side-scrolling adventure. Here, most of maze evasion has been swapped for fluid platforming and precision dodges, but the sporadic references to the old dot-muncher’s roots provide a remarkable ret-con. Hopefully, someone inside Bandai Namco is greenlighting a Dig Dug RPG and a Splatterhouse deckbuilder.

I’ve also been spending time trying to slay enemies and shave seconds off my runs in Hell Clock. Developer Rogue Snail’s game has a multitude of influences, blending Diablo-esque combat, roguelike powerups, and a context culled from Brazil’s War of Canudos. Save for drinking the Steam Deck’s battery power like iced tea on a scorching summer day, it’s running well on Valve’s hardware, letting me to get a run or two accomplished during my commute.

Ryan’s pick: Admittedly it’s been way too long since I’ve played a soulslike, so this week’s official stamp goes to WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers. The visuals really are what are drawing me to the game as the bosses look absolutely terrifying, and the attack animations equally are fluid and flashy. Parrying, precision blocking, and riposting are not my strongest suits, but hopefully it’s not a necessary mechanic during the game (I’m looking at you, last boss in Lies of P). The one thing that I really liked about Dark Souls 3, Nioh 2, and Bloodborne was that even though the areas were fixed, exploration was still really fun. Fingers crossed this is the case with this game as well.

Golden Tee was a staple for decades in arcades (as well as in college bars), so I am going to give this one a nod as well. Granted, you won’t have that massive roller ball controller in front of you when you play this time, but overall, the golf experience in these games was pretty intuitive and fun for the casualist of players. Included are several different Golden Tee versions, and it also has additional shuffleboard and bowling bonus games. If you are looking for a fairly relaxing game for your Steam deck with a lot of content, then definitely pick this one up.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I am truly fascinated by a couple of releases this week. The first is Golden Tee which, as far as I can tell, has never been released on console before. In fact, I had no idea the series existed because it has been “arcade only” through its history and the “home edition” is a couple of thousand dollars. So why release this emulated version? Why?!? It is very good fun though. I’m glad they did. Six classic golf games, as well as a decent bowling game and shuffleboard! SHUFFLEBOARD! Great value.

I am also so very intrigued by Shadow Labyrinth, because this is such a strange direction to take Pac-Man. But it does look like it might work. I’m not the world’s biggest fan of Metroidvanias, however, when it comes to experimentation and creativity, I am all for it, and it does look like Shadow Labyrinth will deliver that. Like Rob, I’m looking forward to the next wild idea Bandai Namco has. My bet’s on a Mr. Driller Soulslike.
