Rob’s pick: If you’re getting a Switch 2, then Mario Kart World seems like an obligatory pick-up. Ever since the series SNES debut, I thoroughly enjoyed playing Mario Kart solo, but it’s also one of the few competitive titles that cultivates some friendly rivalries. And while Matt is going to try to goad you into getting Bravely Default as well, I’m going to tell you that Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is the better game. Sure, it’s a classic showdown between tradition and innovation, but I really relished how Azuma emphasized the richness of community and the gratification of renewal.
Speaking of restoration, this week’s release of Natsume’s Book of Friends: Hazuki no Shirushi has me interested, since I’m a big fan of the anime. Before Demon Slayer revealed empathy for its monsters, Book of Friends depicted a journey of mending some of our ancestor’s missteps. I’m hoping Hazuki no Shirushi is able to capture the beauty of that sentiment. Tragically, I feel ‘gentle’ stories are falling out of fashion.
Ryan’s pick: After a large helping of tough love recently, my respect for Mario Kart has been renewed as I was repeatedly more than humbled by some teenagers when playing the game. The nuanced improvements and balancing the game has received over the years really has made this franchise a game night staple, and it does this by threading the needle between keeping skilled players busy with formidable AI, while also helping those that are less skilled or have fallen behind still feel engaged. I’m going with Mario Kart World because I know that it is a solid choice in that it will be engaging for years to come, even in single player mode.
Natsume’s Book of Friends has been my end-of-day relaxation anime for over a decade so I’m going to suggest Natsume’s Book of Friends: Hazuki no Shirushi if you want to slow things down for a brief moment, or if you are interested in visual novels and yokai. I find the overall tone, music, and characters to be pretty calming, plus there are some pretty high profile Japanese male voice actors that work on this series. So, if you are looking for a bit of a change from wanton mayhem or if you have had too much sensory input for the day then give this game a try.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): It’s all about the Switch 2 for me this week, of course. The obvious choice for a launch game is an obvious choice, so to be a little different I’ll recommend Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess instead. This is an excellent blend of tower defence and action, and I can’t help but feel it was a little overlooked on its initial release, so with any luck being a launch title will help draw some new eyeballs to it.
The other pick is, as Robert says, Bravely Default, finally rescued from the 3DS. This is a brilliant, classical JRPG, with a clever, tactical combat system, amazing job class system, and Edea, who is one of the finest JRPG protagonists in many years. It looks ABSOLUTELY SUBERB in high resolution on the Switch 2’s screen, too. The developers have done an exceptional job of remastering it. Edea’s never looked better. I don’t think I can properly articulate just how much I love Edea. Mrgrgr.
