Rob’s pick: Sure, Ruffy and the Riverside might look like yet another colorful indie platformer, but this is a game that channels the spirit and imagination of the PlayStation 2 era. Nearly every object in Ruffy’s world can be grabbed and subsequently thrown, providing a wealth of opportunities for creative puzzling. The best part is when you feel like you’re cheating the game. Developer Zockrates Laboratories understands human behavior and habitually indulges players here.
Contrasting against that whimsy is the weighty weirdness of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Kojima’s latest casts us out into the big, beautiful bleak once more. Yes, there are still packages, but they’re coupled by those trademark boss battles, a wealth of eccentricity, and a cast that would rival any Hollywood film. This week, I’ll be strapping up, heading out, and trying to figure out what the hell this fever dream all means.

Ryan’s pick: I recently have been watching Summer Pockets on Crunchyroll so I think I’m going to go with Summer Pockets REFLECTION BLUE. I haven’t watched the entirety of the show so far, but there’s a slight angle of mystery as it relates to the main character and his ties to the island where the story takes place. Overall, all the characters are unique, and really likeable. I thought it was pretty funny how the one younger character kept forcing the main character to eat chahan for every meal as that was the only thing she knew how to make. Thematically, the series leans more towards romance mixed with heartache, so if you are looking for a more story-driven VN then this is a good choice.
There is one other Japanese game that will be released on Steam which is Sofia in Exchange that looks interesting. Storytelling through the medium of surveillance cameras filming a girl with multiple personalities seems like a pretty cool premise and although the subject matter seems much heavier than Summer Pockets I think that a little suspense can really help push a story forward and keep it engaging. For some reason my referential brain started to draw parallels to Toko from Dangan Ronpa when I first found out about this one. Psychological thriller fans would be my suggested audience for this one, so please give it a look if you are into mystery adventures.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): This is simple this week: Death Stranding was one of the smartest and pertinent games I’ve ever played, and I firmly believe that Kojima will come up with more magic here.
It really is as simple as that.
