Hope, Hearts, and Hoverboards

This week, a robust lineup of games rolls out, headlined by the long-awaited Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army, which revives Atlus’ cult classic with a fresh coat of demonic polish. Rob’s pick: Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army is your typical re-release. Instead Atlus has given the game a rather comprehensive overhaul. Now, the real‑time demon‑summoning battles feel sufficiently lively, especially with the inclusion of modern mechanics like dodges, punchy combos, and finishers. Factor in comforts like voice acting, fast travel, and quest markers, and I’ll definitely be spending time intermingling with the supernatural across 1930’s Tokyo.

Yet as cool as Raidou Kuzunoha XIV’s razor-sharp sideburns are, they’re not match for the lavish treatment that’s been given to Akari, Masashi, and Shiho in ToHeart. AQUAPLUS’ 1997 dating sim has been given an absolutely stunning makeover that brings static images to life with graceful animation. Usually, I’m skeptical when technology is applied to a classic, as something is often lost in the process. But the demo quelled most of my concerns and a bit of springtime sunlight and a gentle breeze is the escapism I need right now.

Ryan’s pick: I’ve been on an open world kick lately, and after finishing up my recent Star Wars Jedi: Survivor playthrough I am eager to keep the momentum. Star Overdrive checks the box for me this week, providing an open world experience mixed with hoverboarding, puzzles, and attacking things with your keytar. Visually it reminds me a little bit of Trigun and it feels like the exploration and puzzle solving portion will have my gacha brain right at home as both Genshin Impact and Tower of Fantasy both offer similar experiences which I do enjoy.

Mushroom Musume also caught my interest with the premise of being able to raise a mushroom from a spore to a mushroom woman. My referential brain immediately started to subtly wonder if this is anything like Seaman, but I suppose I’ll need to fully experience the game first to be able to draw parallels. I royally dropped the ball by feeding Seaman too much larva at once. I still regret that grievous error to this day. Stylistically for this game I really like the interesting contrasts between the art and in general I think that with the use of dice and the ability to make choices should lead to various interesting outcomes that will offer some replay value. Overall, the theme and tones seem to range from creepy and light horror to magical fantasy, so it certainly seems like it will provide a wide range of emotions for various audiences. If you are into life simulation games, then please give this a look

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Clearly 100 in 1 Game Collection is going to be the highlight this week. When has a pack of 100 games in one ever not delivered quality? And you think I’m joking, just consider that this collection has a Bejeweled clone in it. Clearly, it’s going to be my game of the month, if not year.

Having never played ToHeart, but being aware of its status as a somewhat legendary visual novel, I’m quite looking forward to this remake. Especially since the developers seem to have really gone all-out with the production values.

And finally, as a long-time fan of the SMT series – especially of its PS2 era – I am naturally a fan of Raidou Remastered too. While I wouldn’t mind if Atlus never did an action combat system again, the game’s going the SMT vibe going for it in spades, and the narrative is dark, intense, and interesting. Turns out the Taisho era is good for a game about summoning demons and investigating mysteries.
