Rob’s Pick: If I was into cooperative shooters, I’d give FBC: Firebreak a shot. Flaunting Remedy’s usually technical and artistic prowess, there’s plenty of spectacle amidst the taut, chaotic gunplay. While I didn’t get too much hands-on time with it, imagine if the cartoonishness of Ghostbusters was replaced with a steady succession of explosions and reanimated office equipment. Yes, there’s a boss made of Post-its, where every hit scatters those yellow notes around, which is a brilliant idea. Given that it perplexed most of the gaming media (maybe they weren’t subjected to cubicle culture) and doesn’t scale for soloist experience, Firebreak might be facing an uphill battle.

While I like my tower defense chaotic, I agree with Matt about Kingdom Rush Vengeance. Developer Ironhide Game Studio had a solid formula. But I just wish they’d be willing to take more chances with it.

Ryan’s pick: Recently I’ve been doing a play of RoboCop: Rogue City with a friend which has a fair amount of gore, so sticking with that theme I’m going to go with GUNTOUCHABLES. I like the premise in that you are a ‘prepper’ that has to survive as part of a group in an apocalyptic world full of mutants. Visually there’s a slight cartoonish feel to it that reminds my referential brain a bit of the visuals from Time Killers for some reason. I typically like to tackle roguelikes incrementally, so I can see myself enjoying this one slowly while hoping for some strong drops.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): The thing is that this week the bulk of my gaming free time will be in Magic the Gathering Arena. The Final Fantasy set just landed there (I know the physical cards have been out for a while but I only play Arena), and I have 250,000 in-game gold saved up. That’s, like, 250 packs. And the very first pack I opened I got Fat Chocobo and Tonbery. This set is very, very dangerous to me.

Meanwhile, I’m also kinda looking forward to Kingdom Rush Vengeance on the Switch. I don’t generally like playing games on my mobile, but I do like the Kingdom Rush aesthetic, and I love a good tower defence game. Now it’s going to be on a console I do enjoy. So, yay! Something to unwind with when I’m taking a break from drawing in virtual cards.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

One Comment

  1. I feel like FBC: Firebreak barely got (bought?) any attention from press and streamers. Fire sale soon.
