Rob’s pick: As much as I wanted to enjoy Rune Factory 5, the franchise’s first 3D outing wasn’t quite all that innovative. Regrettably, it felt just like the series’ customary blend of agriculture and action but from a new visual angle. I’m hoping that Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma will take a few more risks, since the market now has plenty of other respectable life-sim titles now.
I’m glad they swapped the typical wagon-wheel farmsteads for a fantasy-Eastern aesthetic. Crafted characters rather than role-your-own ciphers are another plus, pointing at focused linear storytelling (local book-loving baddie, I’m going to miss you). If I can craft and sell my own junmai this could be a GOTY contender. The other thing I’m looking forward to is Scar-Lead Salvation, which looks a bit like Returnal, but reimagined by Idea Factory.
Ryan’s pick: I’m going to be putting my Diablo IV Season 8 Paragon grind on hold this week as Elden Ring Nightreign is finally here. Truthfully, I’ve been on the fence for this game for a bit as the multiplayer portion of it is a departure from the single player experience, but I still think it’s worth a try. I’m hopeful that the single player experience will eventually become viable as I can see how things may get frustrating if you continue to get paired with new Elden Ring players that may not be as experienced in boss battles. I think it will be a lot of trial and error, but I definitely am interested in seeing some of the new bosses.
Nice Day for Fishing gets a mention as well this week as I honestly can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a good fishing RPG. I like this one because it looks like it doesn’t take itself too seriously and the spritework and core mechanics look great. The collector in me also likes the fact that you can seek out to catch all sorts of different types of fish and dredge up parts to fix up your town. Overall, it seems pretty light-hearted and fun, so give this one a look if you are looking for a different flavor of RPG.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I echo Rob’s pick of the week: Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is my choice this week, and not just because it has excellent swimsuits. It does, but that’s not the only reason I’m looking forward to talking about this game. Mind you, we do diverge on the fact that I loved Rune Factory 5, so perhaps I’m just a farming JRPG fanatic.
My other pick this week is FUGA. It’s a small miracle that the FUGA series has reached a third game, since they seem to sell about ten copies each time, but the ten people that do buy them absolutely love them, and there’s a very good reason for that. I fully expect FUGA 3 to be of the same astronomically high standard, so those few of us that pick it up can once again beg everyone willing to listen to give the series a chance. We know we’re going to be ignored. We try anyway. Seriously, if you’ve not played FUGA you really are missing out on something special.
Rise of Industry 2 for PS5 doesn’t have a price.
