Rob’s pick: Although technology presses onward, a significant portion of my recreational time is spent playing Game Boy Advance games. Back then, cartridge memory was capped at 32 megabytes, resulting in succinct experiences without bloat. As such, I have my eye on Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo. The titular toy has a variety of functions, and is used in everything from combat, parkour-like navigation, and even a bit of puzzle-solving. I’m not sure about PortMaster compatibility (allowing for play on Linux-based handhelds) but that would be great to see.
As a kid, I used to visit a now nearly defunct restaurant called Anna Miller’s. Fans of eroge and fighting games might recognize it as the inspiration behind Yuka Takeuchi, known for wearing the chain’s iconic uniform while brawling rival waitresses from other family restaurants. Variable Geo was never a top-tier fighter, but this week’s release of Advanced V.G. Saturn Tribute is worth noting if you’re into quirky curios with a bit of playful jiggle.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I love Duck Detective so much. The first game was one of my highlights of last year, and this new one is more of the same. Which is a good thing! A short, sweet, and constantly entertaining little game that’s impossible to put down until the mystery is solved and our Ducky Bogart can go back to his unhealthy addiction to bread. Also there’s a quack button.
I’d also never say no to Onimusha, especially when it’s a quality HD remaster of what is arguably the pinnacle of the series. I really do hope that Capcom is using these remasters to test the waters for another one, but either way I can’t recommend enough to jump in and give this “new” one a go if you haven’t yet experienced them.
Ryan’s pick: “Hateful Fruit Company” is invading Shinjuku and I won’t stand for it. CONERU -DIMENSION GIRL- wins the pick this week for being a quirky platformer with some really vibrant and impressive visuals. Merged with a combat android named Socrates, you take the role of a dimensional girl named Coneru that must save Shinjuku city from an alien invasion. The part I like the most about this one is all the bright and flashy explosions, mixed with a really upbeat soundtrack that reminds me a bit of the Mega Man series.
Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo gets a mention as well this week as it seems like there’s some different genres subtly mashed up with this one. Visually there’s a slight homage to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and overall the quality of the sprites made this one stand out, plus maneuvering using the yoyo also seems like it could introduce some pretty fun mechanics.
NEKOPARA After is only on PC? Lame!
