New Releases: May 1st-7th, 2025
Rebel Girls, Pirates, and Young Ultras
This week, Peglin brings its pachinko-inspired roguelike play onto PlayStation and Xbox. Meanwhile, Captain Blood finally makes it ashore, after being lost at sea since the game’s debut showing at the 2004 Electronic Entertainment Expo. If neither of those sound interesting, Rebellion GODSOUL: Awakening (pictured) might not have a proper localization. But it’s got the looks. Rob’s pick: I’m deeply intrigued by Hundred Fires: The Rising of Red Star. Not only does it look like a D-grade knock-off of Metal Gear Solid, but the publisher’s screenshots didn’t even bother to remove the Windows activation nag. But enough punching low, let’s talk about scaring folks with cards. Yes, Deck of Haunts looks like an interesting twist on the old tower defense formula. I’m always up for some digital disobedience and a bit of innovation is welcome, too.
I might have to give Back from the Other World, I Missed Love a try. I feel like I need to experience one of these FMV harem games to broaden my perspective and get stepped on by a sexy Demon King.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I am genuinely fascinated by Captain Blood. A lost game from the early 2000s that has been for some reason resurrected? Cool. Sharing the name with a 1922 historical novel and classic Errol Flynn film? That certainly has my attention. The promise of flashy combos and big action in an exotic Caribbean setting? Well, that bit might be a bit well-trodden, but some classic ideas are classic for a reason. This is, simply, a fascinating project and, sure, it might be utterly terrible, but it might also be a glorious throwback to a different era of game design. Fingers crossed.
Elsewhere, The Horror at Highrook looks like a really sweet little blend of tabletop experience and digital card game. I mean I remain a sucker for Lovecraft, Poe and Stoker, which were all influences on this game according to the developer, so they’re speaking my language, and I do like the dark fantasy blended with Hero Quest vibe of the tabletop art. This could easily become a game I spend a lot of time with.
Ryan’s pick: Admittedly I haven’t been the best FPS player lately, but METAL EDEN looks promising. The one thing that I am pretty particular about is the framerate with this genre, but from what I’ve seen so far animations and gameplay look quite smooth. Thematically, I typically prefer horror for this genre, but I can still appreciate cybernetic warfare gibs, so here’s to giving this a go on Steam.
I must give an emphatic runner-up nod to the Hundred Fires: The Rising of Red star -Complete Edition-. I have been secretly anticipating the re-release of MGS 3: Snake Eater so this self-described delirious, absurd, and ridiculous story should hopefully be more than enough to keep me entertained until then. I will also continue my playthrough of recently released Blue Prince this week. Lately GamePass has had a lot of great games, and this one has really been a lot of fun.
So we’re all just going to ignore a game named “Cato: Buttered Cat”?
