Ryan’s pick: There’s plenty of great choices this week, but SNK goes to the top of my list with FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves. I’ve always loved this series ever since the arcade days, and the new art style looks spectacular. The purist in me may shy away from it, but the new Smart Style input control system sounds like it should be pretty fun to try as it makes performing special moves a lot easier for newcomers. My hope is that this game has the same appeal that Tekken 8 had in that attacks felt powerful, were equally flashy, and felt pretty natural when doing the inputs.
I have two other honorable mentions this week, the first being the RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Typically, I default to Japanese RPGs as they have been the staple for really great games for decades, but I really liked the visual effects of the attacks and battle for this game. Visually things look to be on par with current gen RPGs coming from Japan, so please give this one a glance. The second game is the Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion Remastered. I spent an incredible amount of time playing Skyrim, and with this game being on GamePass I can’t resist.
Rob’s Pick: I have to second Ryan’s appreciation for Japan’s role-playing games. There’s something deeply satisfying about familiarity and an admiration of tradition. As such, Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero gets my endorsement. Reuniting with Marona and Ash will produce smiles for senior TRPGheads like me. But it’s the game’s combat rather than the storytelling that earns the nod, scaling seemlessly in both difficulty and complexity.
But occasionally, I have to mix things up, so I’ll also be scoping out Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. I purposefully don’t know anything about the plot. But I have seen some nice-looking looking menus, which is as irresistible as the Siren’s call. Lastly, Starless Abyss is a turn-based space-Lovecraftian sleeper that won’t appeal to the masses. But if you’re reading this, you’re not one of them\, anyway.
Switch 2 better have Fatal Fury: City of Wolves.
If they do, it might be $80 and digital.
