Rob’s pick: I know not everyone appreciates STGs (I’m looking at you, Matt). But this week, Revolgear Zero might produce a few converts. First, it scales amazingly well, with a difficulty setting that allows novices to make their way through at least the first few stages while breaking a sweat. Fortunately, it also scales up nicely, increasing the level of spiciness to your personal tastes. The other merit is that the game is built around a well-engineered set of gameplay systems that encourage daredevil tactics like bullet grazing and burst attack blazes. The levels themselves are smartly designed, often harmonizing with the 2000 or so different kinds of loadouts. I didn’t even mention the presence of a mini-game in my recent review, but I did manage to not mix metaphors.

Last week, Ryan mentioned the Star Fox-like action of FUR Squadron Phoenix. Since I can’t say no to a decent on-rails shooter, I’ll be putting some flight time into Raptor Claw’s sophomore effort. Hopefully, they stick with it and give the genre a much-needed reinvigoration.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Neva: Prologue is going to be an essential play for me. The developer is almost unparalleled in its ability to tell heartfelt and powerfully emotional, evocative stories using the efficiencies of the platformer format, and Neva itself is just one incredibly memorable game. If the developers can add meaningfully to that – and I have every reason to believe they can, then this will be one special piece of DLC.

I’m also really looking forward to getting stuck into PARANORMASIGHT: The Mermaid’s Curse. The predecessor, as a “visual novel” from Square Enix, was perhaps the most humble game that the publisher backed in the last decade, yet it was also one of the most memorable and interesting games. I’ve played it through a few times now. So, if this sequel is half that game – and again I have no reason to believe that it won’t be – then it will also be one of the hidden gems of the year.

Finally, Styx: Blades of Greed. Because why not? Cyanide are probably my favourite Eurojank developers and the first Styx was a lot of fun for what it was.

Ryan’s pick: I’m in agreement with Rob this week and am going to go with Revolgear Zero as the official pick. My prowess in the genre knows its bounds, and I will absolutely be taking advantage of some of the easier modes as I’m still reeling from the childhood trauma that Truxton put me through. Certain game modes also include an AI assistant for some co-op play, so I think there will be enough different combinations of weapons and modes to keep this one interesting for a while. My choice of console for it will be the Switch 2 as I typically pick this genre up and put it down a bunch and portables are good for that.

The music in the Ys series alone is enough for a quick honorable mention for Ys X: Proud Nordics. At least for me, graphically the series has stayed relatively the same for the past decade, but the one thing that keeps me coming back is the music and the gameplay. Dual guitars and musically interesting melodies always seem to amplify the action in these games, so if you’re looking for an engaging action-RPG this series is a great choice.
