Rob’s Pick: This week’s trio of Atelier Ryza DX titles bundle the base games, previously released DLC, and new characters (Agatha, Kilo, and Romo for Ryza 1, Empel and Lila for Ryza 2, and Clifford, Kilo, and Serri for Ryza 3). Hopefully, Gust wove all of them into the main plotlines. So, if you were on the sidelines as the Ryza trilogy unfolded, this is a great way to follow Reisalin Stout’s alchemical adventures. I just there was a bigger effort to make their affordable to fans who already purchased the trilogy.

And while I should be interested in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, I’m turned off by Nintendo’s policies. No, it’s not the $70 price, always that’s quite a bit of coin in this economy. Instead, it’s the company’s requirement that outlets are forbidden from discussing ANYTHING about story in pre-release reviews. To me, that’s a needlessly heavy-handed approach.

Ryan’s pick: Koei Tecmo’s hack and slash games have always been a guilty pleasure of mine so this week Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment gets bumped up to the top of my list. In terms of getting used to the gameplay I think that it’s fairly easy to get hooked in that you can usually jump right into these games and fare pretty well. There is also no shortage of content in that you can play as various characters and continue to level them up, so for completionists this one provides plenty of value. This one should be an easy pick up for Legend of Zelda fans, as well, so if you’re looking for a new game for you Switch 2 check this one out.

Lumines was one of my first PSP games way back when it came out, and that kept me super engaged after playing a bit too much Ridge Racer. I really like what they did visually with Lumines Arise in that it’s clear they put a lot of time and thought into the puzzle visuals for each stage and included additional animations and visuals to the areas outside of the puzzle area that help add extra context and movement. I really am also looking forward to the music, as it’s the same company that did the soundtrack for Tetris Effect: Connected.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I am so, so excited for Sacred 2: Fallen Angel Remaster. Sacred 2 has got to be my favourite “Diablo-like” of all. I spend dozens of hours with it back on the PlayStation 3. Then I decided to buy it on Steam only to discover that I couldn’t get it working. So, with the remaster I’ll finally get to hack and slash my way through a vaguely MMO-like world once again. I actually wonder if I’ll be as fond of it now, with the passage of time, but I’m very intrigued to find out.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment also goes without saying this week. It’s a Musou game, after all. I can’t imagine a scenario where I don’t enjoy what Koei does with this series now. I’m not as invested in Tears of the Kingdom as some others, but I do think it’s a magnificent game and this adds to the overall lore and worldbuilding, while also offering plenty of big, flashy action. Would I have preferred more Fire Emblem Warriors? Yes, but I’d never say no to this.

Mike’s pick: Sacred 2 was one of those games where everyone I know seemed to like it, yet somehow, I missed it. So, I might have to pick it up this week, which wouldn’t be the first time I’m 17 years late on things. I missed 2006’s Persona 3 as well and didn’t make amends until Reload came out last year.

Service with a Shotgun offers a stylish mix of shootouts and sarcasm that feels like my kind of game. Yes, the gunplay is satisfying enough, but it’s the snappy dialogue and melodramatic storytelling that keep things going. If you like your games full of personality, you might want to check this one out.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

One Comment

  1. I’m the kind of guy that might pick up Finding Chuchu this week. I had enough of Gust and their rehashes.
