Rob’s Pick: If you like tactics games with bit of eccentricity, Demonschool is one to keep an eye on. With its creative grid-based combat, Persona-like school life sim, and coming of age stories, there’s a lot to like about Necrosoft’s latest. And if you appreciate collection of several scattered mini-games, you might want to enroll this week.
If you’re a fan of platforming games, here are two takeaways this week. First, SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide isn’t as bad as you might suspect. Sure, the presence of a season pass isn’t doing the game any favors. But the action recalls the simple joys of some of the better PlayStation 2-era licensed titles. Lastly, if you aren’t into retro platformers, Claire a la Mode should be solid since developer Colorgrave has a winning track record.

Ryan’s pick: Claire a la Mode gets the spotlight this week for being a unique 2D platformer with fast and quirky action. The premise and overarching theme of the game is baking, and with a large cast of selectable and unlockable characters and the option of coop play I think there’s a lot to offer here. The sheer speed of how fast the game moves also is one of the things that has me interested, but knowing my dinosaur brain I may not be able to gracefully play this one without some practice. The bosses, attacks, and characters all have their own quirks, so if you are looking for a slightly different charming platformer and like sprites this one is for you.
Speaking of coop, the honorable mention for this week goes to Stuck Together. You and a friend locally or with a stranger online are bound together and it’s your job to rotate and swing through various random environments full of dangers. The game touts the simple mechanics of climb, fall, and repeat as you attach yourselves to various physics-based objects in an attempt to escape a house full of various dangers. It looks like good old coop randomness, and it could be a good fit if you’re in the market to take your friendship to a new realm, or to have some potentially memorable experiences with strangers.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): It’s been quite a while since I played an Inazuma Eleven title. As a fan of football, and anime, and Level-5, it’s a good time when it works well, and with Level-5 being back in good form thanks to Fantasy Life earlier this year, my hopes are high that this one will hook me in the same way that I was hooked with the 3DS title many years ago.
I also highly recommend Anno 117: Pax Romana. Ubisoft is and always will be Ubisoft, but Anno is the one series where it consistently gets things right (probably because there isn’t quite the same pressure for the game to be a billion-seller as the other Ubisoft properties). Anno 117 brings city-building excellence to ancient Rome, combined with the clandestine politics of the era. It’s an appealing mix, and while it might only be iterative to the Anno formula, those iterations hit nicely.

Wait, INAZUMA ELEVEN is a soccer harem? Looks like it from the pic.
