Rob’s pick: While many find delight in Pokémon’s cheerful worlds, I was always more drawn to Digimon, which sporadically explored themes like loss and grief. While the chronically overacting online groups might label the property as “depressing”, I appreciate how Toei Animation and Bandai weren’t afraid to tackle a variety of issues. But here’s the thing I truly find dispiriting: Digimon Story Time Stranger costs $70 to $120 dollars to play. Games are at their best when they can be enjoyed by everyone, and this kind of pricing will mean a lot of people who appreciate RPG storytelling might miss out on this worthwhile series.
As such, I’d recommend checking out Shujinkou. Whether you’re interested in character interaction, dungeon crawling, or learning a bit of Nihongo, Rice Game’s epic is one of the most prodigious indie efforts that I’ve seen. Previously released on PC, this week, the title makes its way to Switch, bringing everything from tough battles to kana learning to Nintendo’s hardware. Lastly, Brave × Junction’s blackjack-based battles might get some playtime this week.

Ryan’s pick: Super Mario Galaxy released right when I was in the throes of The Burning Crusade in 2007, and while I did own the game, I never got a chance to finish it and it’s haunted me since then. With the release of Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 it’s time to finally finish these two classics. Nintendo has also included some improvements including an Assist Mode, so I think that it’s a pretty appealing combo for your Switch 2, especially for audiences out there that may have not had a chance to play these two.
I made a gentlemen’s agreement with my brother that if he played Dark Souls 3 and finished it that I would then have to play Ghost of Tsushima in return. While he did play some of Dark Souls 3, I never did pick up Ghost of Tsushima as he never fulfilled his part of the deal. However, I’ve always regretted not playing it, so I’m thinking I should try out Ghost of Yotei. The main protagonist voice actress in Japanese is Fairouz Ai who voices Power from Chainsaw Man as well as Jolyene Cujoh from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure so that is also something to look forward to. On a separate note there’s a Starcraft II collab in Diablo IV right now which has me seriously thinking about picking up the Kerrigan skin. My only qualm is that it’s for the spiritborn class, but you can use her wings on all your characters.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): So naturally my pick this week is Ghost of Yotei and… ahahaha no I can’t do it. Of course that isn’t my pick this week.
I am, however, very interested in Digimon Story Time Stranger. While Digimon doesn’t exactly captivate me like Pokemon or Shin Megami Tensei does, I do still love the monster collecting and battling, and some of the dino designs are cute. I also really enjoyed the tactics RPG/visual novel blend of the last Digimon game, where it felt like the IP was finding an all new way to define itself. If they can continue on that pathway, this might just be one of my low-key favs of the year.
I’m also going to mention Shujinkou, as a blend of dungeon crawler and language learning tool – you really will genuinely learn some Japanese as you play, and as a game it’s really very well made. The game itself has been out on other platforms for quite some time, but it does feel appropriate to have it on the Switch as well. Dungeon crawlers just do better on there.

Mike’s pick: Super Mario Galaxy is one of those games that always seems to get a mention during “great platformer” conversations, and for decent reasons. The gravity-bending platforming, orchestral soundtrack, and stage design are the kind of Nintendo magic you rarely see replicated by other developers. That said, I have to be honest: I’m a little salty about the price point. For a game that originally released in 2007, seeing Nintendo bundle it with Galaxy 2 and charge a premium feels like we’re paying nostalgia tax. I’m not suggesting skipping the Galaxy re-releases but waiting until there’s a sale. Let’s send Nintendo a message about greed and meet us halfway on price.
And while Robert might think I’m a normie for liking Pokémon more than Digimon, I wish I would redeem myself by recommending Digimon Story Time Stranger. But that MSRP is out of pocket. Do a struggling developer a favor and pick up 4 or 5 games during this Autumn Steam sale instead. Off the top of my head, Paper Animal Adventure, Earthion, Turnip Boy Robs a Bank have been sparking joy for me.

Waiting for you Sonic Wings Reunion review. 🙂
