Rob’s Pick: If you have a Switch or Xbox, both Infinos and its sequel are worth picking up, especially for $4 apiece. While it’s a shame that these tough-but-fair horizontally-scrolling STGs aren’t on Steam, you can always download the former for free on developer Picorinne’s website. What you’ll find is an engaging effort that takes inspiration from everything from Gradius to R-Type, yet still manages to feel distinctive.
Beyond shoot ‘em ups, TRPGs are another genre I can’t rebuff. As such, Fantasy Maiden Wars – DREAM OF THE STRAY DREAMER – turn-based battles with Reimu, Marisa, and the gals is worth a look. A localization of the Complete Box, this is a quartet of Gensou Shoujo Taisen titles brought together, with a few enhancements. If the concept of Super Robot Wars but Touhou piques your interest, don’t overlook STRAY DREAMER. Lastly, I’ll probably get in a bit of time with 2004’s Ninja Gaiden to honor Itagaki-san. We lost a great one this week.

Ryan’s pick: The Ninja Gaiden series has always rewarded finesse and precision with its gameplay and once the series made the transition to 3D it felt like Team Ninja was able to attain a whole new way to challenge the user. Ninja Gaiden 4 gets the seal of approval this year as visually the series continues to improve, and the animations and visual effects look spectacular. If you are a bit squeamish with blood you may want to proceed with caution, but if you’re okay with it then the swordplay and action in the game looks extremely satisfying. Difficulty-wise these games typically were a bit tough to master, but once you do they are quite a lot of fun.
My honorable mention goes to UNDISPUTED Championship Edition. I have loved fighting games ever since SNES but once I started playing some of the K1 games while in Japan in the PS2 era I found the more realistic fighters to be a lot of fun as well. I don’t have much experience with boxing games outside of many hours of playing Punchout!! but after looking into this one it looks like it could be a good way to release some steam.

Mike’s pick: Lessaria: Fantasy Kingdom Sim puts you in charge of a scrappy realm with wild ambitions. Like a light version of RotTK, you’re tasked with managing resources, keeping your people happy, and juggling alliances with neighboring kingdoms. Like Majesty, you don’t directly control your minions. Instead, they’re autonomous and decide on their own if they’ll accept your bounties. As such, you’ll oversee support systems like marketplaces and blacksmiths that can help your units meet their goals.
I’m slightly interested in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The funny thing is, I always through I’d outgrow Pokémon games. Putting day-one DLC out alongside with a $70 game is the kind of prosperity I’m not experiencing right now. Nintendo outpriced me.

I hope Ninja Gaiden 4 is a return to form. Hard to believe its been 13 years since 3.
