Rob’s pick: There was a time when I used to play first-person shooters almost religiously. But between the focus on multiplayer experiences and a lack of innovation, my love for the genre dwindled. But recently, the Steam version of Deadzone: Rogue got me hooked again, between being able to run well on portable hardware and the upgrades that you get after clearing each room. Narrative is pretty non-existent. Instead, the focus is entering a room unseen, before letting loose with the firepower, and depending on your build, bots.
Similarly, I used to get absorbed by tower defense games, at least until DG2: Defense Grid 2 became the reigning champion. While Bean Beasts doesn’t quite have the flexibility (there are a few frustrating stages until you acquire boosts), it does give you quite a bit of autonomy when attempting to stop the procession of animals. Its UI is better than most of its peers, too.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): GreedFall was the best Eurojank game ever developed. In fact, it came so close to a top-tier RPG that I don’t feel like it’s fair to say that Spiders’ work on that game was a “B-tier” effort at all. I played the very first early access release of GreedFall: The Dying World, and was very impressed with it, though it clearly needed a lot of work (that’s what early access is for, right?). I’m looking forward to seeing the results, now the game is in full release.
I’m also quite interested in checking out Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War!. I have a sneaking suspicion that the game won’t be the scathing criticism of American-style fascism that makes the movie more relevant now than ever (though I’d be happy to be proven wrong there). However, even if it doesn’t, the developer is the same team behind Warhammer 40K Boltgun, and that was my favourite FPS in a very, very long time. I’m hoping this one can capture some more of that brilliance.

Ryan’s pick: I’m a bit bummed my Resident Evil: Requiem playthroughs have come to an end, but sticking with the zombie theme John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando looks to fill this gap with droves of undead chaos. Granted, this game is best played with four players online, I think that I’ll still be able to enjoy it solo with some AI controlled teammates. I loved the droves of zombies running at you in the Left 4 Dead series, so I’m hoping for a similar experience here. Today starts Season 12 in Diablo IV, so I’ll be balancing my time between the two games this week.
I typically pass on medieval themed games (except for the Thief series), but I wanted to give a quick nod to 1348 Ex Voto. I like the premise of playing as a knight errant as you attempt to save someone close to you. The visuals set in medieval-era Italy are quite vibrant and the swordplay looks really well polished and fluid. This could be one to watch if you enjoy story-driven 3rd person action-adventure games.

Looking forward to 1348 Ex Voto. Not enough games in set in the 14th century.
