New Releases for the Week of April 15, 2012

Just how proud are the Polish of CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings? When President Barack Obama met with Poland’s Prime Minister last May, he made sure our Commander in Chief received a copy of the Collector’s Edition. Hopefully, the Oval Office will receive Geralt’s console debut, purported to add components like a new tutorial to welcome players to the Witcher‘s merciless world. Addition and revision are also part of Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention‘s adaptation, which shoehorn’s the netherworld’s academic system into portable form.

DesertEagle’s Pick: Far better than the prototypical quick and dirty port, Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention adapts the core gameplay of 2008’s Absence of Justice and adds a ton of improvements. From bundling all of downloadable content of the PS3 version, adding new bosses, characters, and story elements, as well as endowing character dialog and battles with new animations, Nippon Ichi Software’s adaptation is worthy of admiration. I know Disgaea isn’t for everyone, but if you like SRPGs, near-limitless loot possibilities, or simply derive thrills by sapping a million hit points from enemies, Detention is your destiny, dood!

SeanNOLA’s Pick: Here I am again, on the precipice of yet another Disgaea release. I’m half tempted to purchase Absense of Detention, but I’ve been burned before, so I think I’ll leave the Prinnies to DEagle. Instead, I’ll check on StarDrone Extreme. It looks like a lot of fun, and it will keep my Vita from collecting dust. Can you believe I’ve had to resort to reading on the bus?

Samurage’s Pick: With a plethora of possible game choices this week, my pick was as strange to me as its going to be for you.  Here’s the story; I kid you not, I had been using the word MacGuffin all week without thinking it meant much of anything, and having heard nothing of games with the Moniker.  It just happened to be in my mind.  Then while perusing the list of games, I saw MacGuffin’s Curse.  Raising an eyebrow, I smirked thinking, “what a strange coincidence. I’m sure it’s a silly game.”  Having done some research on it I can assure you it does look to be a silly game… but in a good way.  A werewolf curse, stealth-based adventuring, and comedic puzzle solving make this game look like it might be right up my alley.  It’s likely to be quite campy, but I can always do with a healthy dose of that.  The fates have spoken, so I’ll be giving this unlikely pick a try.

BlueSwim’s Pick: The PSP ports of the first two Disgaea games ended up being the definitive versions of those games because of added content and other improvements. With the laundry list of tweaks and bonuses that the PS Vita version of Disgaea 3 is sporting, I’m fully expecting this trend to continue. The Disgaea games may not be for everyone, but those who dive in and channel their inner Prinny will be rewarded with dozens, if not hundreds, of hours of gameplay.

  1. Between hunting down Bin Laden and trying to jump staring the economy, I doubt Obama has had a change to play Witcher 2. I bet Bidden completed it twice though.

    • Maybe that’s why this country is still all screwed up. OBama’s been playing Witcher instead of running things.

  2. I’ll give Trials Evolution a try this week.

  3. Shocker of the week maybe Deagle’s pick of Absence of Detention. Who saw that coming. 😉

  4. Hasn’t Deadliest Warrior: Ancient Combat already come out? Like months ago?

    • It’s the two Deadliest Warrior DLC together on one big, $30 disk. Never mind that the first one sold for $5.

  5. Another video review for StarDrone Extreme, Deagle?

    BTW- What happened to those?

    • Video reviews take about twice as long to produce. Not only do you have to write the voice-over, but also capture and edit video.

  6. Deagle, so will Absence of Detention hit us up for new DLC? If so that is kind of evil.

  7. Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention for me.

Des- you’ve played it? When will you post the review? I’m pretty excited for it!

  8. The House of the Dead 4 for $10? I’m there! Is that for PS+ or us regular people?

  9. Whatever happened to PC releases that came out the same day as console? I mean didn’t Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet come out over a year ago?

  10. The only think I see worthwhile is Witcher 2, and that’s not something that is for me.

  11. Blankas Electric Anus

First Witcher 2 reviews are good, but feel really vague, like they only played for a few hours. Are you guys reviewing it?

  12. Witcher 2 might get purchased, if I see a good deal.

  13. “so I think I’ll leave the Prinnies to DEagle”…

I think he’s hinting at a A/A- OMG, it’s the greatest game ever review.

    • Anything less than a “B” and I’d think aliens stole his brains to see what made him so JRPG obsessed.

  14. Don’t have a Vita, but I like the idea of playing Disgaea 3 in little breaks. I played the hell out of the first game on my PSP.

  15. Witcher 2 for 360 this week.

  16. After back to back completions of Skyrim and Amalur, I can wait on the Witcher. I need a break from the fantasy RPG for a while.

  17. The House of the Dead 4 for $10? Sure, why not?

  18. “What you peddling”?!?

Two votes for Disgaea 3 huh?

  19. There’s goes the unanimous record, right out the window.

  20. I have $10 on my SEN account. The House of the Dead 4 seems like a great way to get rid of it.

  21. Saw both the Witcher 2 and Disgaea today. Bought neither. I know I’m not a true Tech-Gamer, huh? I did get Tales for the 3DS two weeks ago, for what it’s worth.

  22. Sean, you’re reading instead of playing your Vita? How’s your analysis on how the Vita is doing?

    • I think others are bored with their Vita as well. My HS has two used ones. This doesn’t look good.

    • The only games that I’ve really felt have been worth my time so far have been UMvC3, MotorStorm RC and Mutant Blobs Attack, and those haven’t been enough to keep me glued for 2 months. I’m banking on big news at e3.

      • Yeah, with stores like Target clearing Vita accessories out and not having much of a selection to begin with, I cant help but feel the Vita may be another PSP.

        • The Vita is floundering at retail channels, which surprises no one.. Why? Because it’s Sony being the old Sony still, thinking they can do anything.

As if the PS3 wasn’t a lesson the Vita is. Beyond Gamestop look at how retailers are treating it. How much hype proceeded launch? Almost nil. Now, it’s dying on the vine, with only a steep price cut to save it.

One more thing- where’s American support for it? Beyond ports only a few downloadably games. Keep up the great work, Sony.

  23. You left off the free finger painting app for Vita.
