New Releases for the Week of July 22nd, 2012

MaliciousWhether players are working up a sweat with Wreckateer, a title which combines two casual game darlings- Angry Birds and the Kinect Sensor, or burning calories with Adidas MiCoach, this week’s new releases offer a number of ways to put the hurt of flabbiness. Coupled by two new PS Vita downloads, there’s little reason why gamers need to be quiescent, unless they prefer to play PC ports of overlooked console titles, such as Inversion or Prototype 2.

Rusty Hearts: Reborn

DesertEagle’s Pick: I’m hoping that the Sony employee responsible for green-lighting the stateside publishing of Malicious gets a big, fat raise. It’s not often gamers that receive a digital download plucked from Japan which flaunts both a boss attack mechanic right out of the Mega Man series along with sumptuous visual fidelity (think Bayonetta) and liquescent animation. Speaking of Sony’s potential successes- let’s hope that Wizorb is compatible with the PS Vita; it’s a delightful Arkanoid-type title imbedded with a tenets from the 16-bit era.

Jeremy LaMont’s Pick: It’s not often that the PS Minis platform gets the promotion it deserves. Even the great experiences have to struggle for celebrity. So it’s refreshing that Wizorb (Tribute Games) is getting the full front-page treatment from Sony, following its positive reception on XBLIG and PC/Mac. Wizorb, an Arkanoid-style Breakout game, only crosses into the 2D Adventure-RPG genre tangentially (ala The Legend of Zelda), but does it with a style that looks substantive and extremely nostalgic. You’d better have some nostalgia for your PS3 or PSP too, because this Mini has not yet passed cert for your shiny new Vita, although Sony says that’s coming soon. http://wizorb.com/

Wizorb

SeanNOLA’s Pick: It’s been a while since I’ve let myself get lost in a nuanced strategy game, but Legends of Pegasus may very well be the game that sucks me in. A space strategy title that lets me customize ships down to the finest detail? How can I say no!

 Legends of Pegasus

Samurage’s Pick: Rusty Hearts Reborn!  It’s a series that i haven’t spent enough time with, and I’m hoping that Reborn will reawaken my desire to play the game.  It’s free-to-play, which is a nice way to try a game that you’re not sure you’d love enough to purchase.  I like the visual look of the different weapons and the various combat styles have grabbed my interest.  And I do like a good hack ‘n slash, so here’s hoping that Rusty Hearts Reborn will fit the bill.

  1. Malicious looks delicious.

  2. I’m saving for Growlanser next week.

  3. I’m smart enough not to waste my time with American Mensa Academy. Malicious instead.

  4. Hopefully, there will be a demo of Malicious.

  5. C’mon Wizorb, work on my Vita.

  6. Assuming Legends of Pegasus actually comes out (it was due in April) that might be worth a look. I’m a big sucker for the 4X games.

  7. In Japan, Vita owners got an enhanced port of Malicious. So don’t do around giving raises just yet.

  8. Even though Steam Sales have left me nearly broke I’m chomping at the (8?) bit for WizOrb.

  9. Hate all you want, but Wreckateer looks fun. Let’s hope it’s not quite as unforgiving as Angry Birds. Those little shits can be tough as times.

  10. The Rusty Hearts: Reborn characters look pretty cool. I may have to give it a try.

    • You should. It looks great and the price is right.

With my budget, I’m going free to play until September.

  11. “You’d better have some nostalgia for your PS3 or PSP too, because this Mini has not yet passed cert for your shiny new Vita, although Sony says that’s coming soon”

Sony needs to get cert before releases game not after. What the hell is wrong with them?

    So no WizOrb for me.

  12. I loved Wizorb for PC and there’s no reason why I wouldn’t love it on the go.

  13. I can’t wait for Foosball. From what I’ve heard it’s pretty good. And it gives me an excuse to use my Move controller, which I’m always looking for.

  14. So is Puddle worth $8? I remember it looked pretty cool.

    • You may have missed the podcast episodes where both Deagle and I complained about Puddle, so let me fill you in on our thoughts. I love physics engine stuff and World of Goo is one of my favorite games so I was super stoked about Puddle. But its pretty bad. On the 360 at least, the physics was really inconsistent and the loading screens would take ages; this for a game in which the levels are about as complex as a my little pony doll. Deagle was just as disappointed by it. Maybe it’ll be better on the Vita??? So I guess if you have $8 just sitting around and nothing better to use it for, and you don’t mind the potential let down, then it’s worth getting. Otherwise save the money, go back and play some World of Goo instead.

  15. FYI- the sidebar thing isn’t loading for me.

Spending my money on the Best Buy Summer clearance. AC:R for $10, hell yes!
