Where Does He Get Those Wonderful Toys- Lego Batman Reviewed

Bruce Wayne, after visiting Sam Fisher’s yard sale.

After giving the polycarbonate treatment to the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, developer Traveller’s Tales has now recreated the Batman universe out of the ubiquitous building blocks. Although Lego Batman’s gameplay is more of a gentle evolution than a radical departure in the series, the core formula is still strong enough to captivate us past the duration of the game’s eighteen levels.

Narrative in Lego Batman is kept to a bare-bones minimum. A handful of villains have escaped from the Arkham Asylum, and it’s up to the Caped Crusader along with the Boy Wonder to capture them. It’s just enough substance to drive the gameplay, while not making the player who skips cut-scenes feel like they are missing much. Players can also take the role of villains; playing levels from the antagonists perspective.

Lego Batman’s universe is an eccentric but effective amalgam of Danny Elfman’s film score, antagonists ripped from comic pages, and unique costumes evidently taken from the action figure line. I don’t recall ever seeing Batman donning a suit providing him the ability to place explosives around Gotham City, but it makes for an interesting gameplay mechanic. Robin has stolen a play from Ratchet’s book, and can walk up metal walls while wearing gigantic shoes that resemble metal garbage can lids. While villains don’t wear different suits they have a number of unique abilities- Harley Quinn can bypass a guard by blowing a kiss, or giving a sexy wiggle.

With these shoes Robin’s not only a crimefighter, but a damn effective peeping tom.

Combat feels tighter, thanks to an increase in the melee move set. Now, if players hit the attack button, your character will attack the nearest human, foe or friend. While Batman is fighting an enemy in front of him, he will kick backwards to subdue an enemy attempting to flank him, or even throw them against the nearest wall. Batarangs are an interesting addition to both main characters; players hold down the square (or “x” button, in the 360 version) to aim. Once initiated, the player can move the Batarang symbol across a number of reticuled targets, before releasing the button. Much like Link’s boomerang, the device follows the path indicated by the player, knocking down all enemies in its path.

Graphically, the game looks slightly better than its previous Lego counterparts. The framerate is typically 60 frames per second, although there in the occasional screen tear when two players are jumping across the screen. Just like Indiana Jones, there is an option to adjust the v-synch, which unfortunately drops the game to a 30 fps refresh rate. The game’s perspective has been tweaked to pull the game’s camera back when two on-screen characters separate. Overall, the look of the game is not wildly different from the previous two Lego installments.

Commissioner Gordon, cover that thing between your legs, the kids are playing.

While players have unlimited lives, they can expect a frequent number of lethal falls, especially in a level like Mr. Freeze’s platform-laden factory. When trying to obtain enough Legos for a level’s Hero requirement, frustration can set it. We could see children getting discouraged at losing thousands of Lego points, after a respawn in a precarious position. Despite previous entry, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga having online co-op, network play is glaringly omitted from the title.

Despite the qualms, we can’t knock Lego Batman too much. It’s a fun, simple, game that can be enjoyed by both adults and children simultaneously. Few games have the ability to maintain the interest of both audiences as well as the Lego series. We just hope that Traveller’s Tales makes some essential changes to the next game in the Lego canon.

Final Grade: B

  1. Great review. The game sound fun, but very much like the other ones.

  2. I have it preordered, but didn’t pick it up yet.

  3. Ok, I bought this yesterday, and don’t really like it that much. I die all the time when falling, and boss fights are all the same.

They really need to change the game, its getting very old.

  4. All TT does is reskin the characters and drop them in their engine. There’s no reason why there’s no online play if they freaking had it with Star Wars!!!!!!!

  5. Nice review. You covered the good and bad fairly.

  6. I love the Lego games for the reason mentioned- I can play with my kid. I don’t really want my six year old playing COD4, and he probably doesn’t have the skills, either.

  7. Great captions. I laughed at the third one! He looks like he’s showing dangler.

  8. I love the lego games. I didn’t even know this was/is coming out so soon.

  9. I like batman, but not the Lego games, so i don’t think I’m gonna buy this one.

  10. Ill end up buying it, just like Indiana and Star Wars.

  11. LOL. too funny!

  12. How many villains are in the game? I assume Joker, riddler, Cat woman and Mr. Freeze…

  13. Is this one any more glitchy than Star Wars. That one drove me and my girlfriend nuts. Some of the races were just awful.

  14. Got it on gamefly.

  15. I’ve always liked the series and I’m excited about this one. But who wants to play as Robin?

  16. I had a good chuckle at the title and captions. While I enjoy the Lego games, I usually get bored with them. I never finished Indy, as every level you did the same thing, whip solve simple puzzles and move forward.

  17. I need this game. Loved SW:TCT. I played through it 4 times.

  18. Some of the pics from the game look funny. Batman wearing 3d glasses? WTF? Still, a good review.

  19. They came out with a Batman Bomber action figure about three years ago; when Begins came out.

  20. Any bit of the new films in the game? Will have to get this game.

  21. Yeah, I could see my brother and I arguing over who gets to be Batman. No one’s first choice is Robin, EVER.

  22. There’s also Penguin, Poison Ivy, Moth-Man, Man-Bat, and Mad Hatter.

  23. My kids have been driving me crazy about this game. I’ll break down and stop by Wal-mart on the way home.

  24. Best Lego game for the series. Been playing it since Tuesday morning. There’s so much stuff to do.

  25. What’s next, Lego Superman? Would the developers alter the game so much so that Lego Superman could fly?

  26. Nothing could beat Atari 2600 Superman. For the money, thats the premier game, everything else in Kryptonite.

  27. I’m excited for this game. I guess I cant get enough of collecting little blocks.

  28. Great review.

  29. I noticed getting enough lego bits to fill the coil is harder than Indiana Jones.

  30. Lego Halo, please!

  31. These games are so fun, and selling them for $10 less than moist games seals the deal for me.

  32. What did Robin say to the Riddler who was holding his heroic friend?

    “Lego Batman”. Hahaha

    WHY SO SERIOUS?

  33. Great review. I’ll be picked this up today!

  34. I’m finding it much more glitchy than Lego Indiana Jones.

In the Mr. Freez level you mentioned, I must have fallen 20 times. Instead of experimenting and saying, “I wonder If I can jump there”; exploration is punished. That for me sucks.

  35. Great review!

  36. Loving this, despite the glitches. Played as the bad guys is very fun.

  37. Got to say I love me some Lego games as such as I loved the toys as a kid.

  38. McDonalds has toys from the game.

  39. Great game. I just rented and plan on buying it. Seems worth the $49.99 price.

  40. Thinking about picking this up. Where’s the best deal?

  41. Great title, and a pretty good review.

  42. I cant get over Robbin being in the game.

  43. Music doesn’t seem to sync with the action. Fail.

  44. Bosses suck, you repeat the same actions over and over.

  45. Good enough so far, but the Batmoile is super squirrely.

  46. Collectors do go too far when it comes to collecting anything. For some reason it hits hard with action figures. Remember when people were nearly killing themselves over Cabbage Patch dolls and Power Ranger action figures? When Christmas time comes it is even worse. What are we teaching the kids? Even if Mom and Dad can’t pay the bills it is all worth it as long as I get the toy that I want.

  47. I bought this yesterday, and don’t really like it that much. I die all the time when falling, and boss fights are all the same.

  48. At first I thought the same, but the game doesn’t penalize yo much for dying. Just pick up those blue rivets, and there’s no problem.
