Robert’s Pick:Scrutinizing Ninja Theory’s first three releases (Kung Fu Chaos, Heavenly Sword, and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West) reveals a developer that’s growing accomplished with each successive release. I’m really hoping that DmC: Devil May Cry doesn’t sully the Cambridge-based studio’s track record, as the demo was satisfying but never quite trumped the bar set by 2010’s Bayonetta. As such, I’ll probably play Corpse Party: Book of Shadows until the inevitable price drop on DmC takes effect.

Eric’s Pick: Okay, I’ll admit it, when Capcom revealed the new Dante character design, I laughed. Hard. ‘Why would they change Dante to this goof?’, I thought to myself. Like most who reacted in a similar manner, I immediately wrote off DmC: Devil May Cry as garbage, moved on, and forgot about it. It wasn’t until I saw it on this week’s new releases that I gave the game a more serious look. What I saw was the new Dante kicking demonic derriere in much the same way as the old Dante did. Whether or not DmC takes the Devil May Cry series to new heights is anybody’s guess.

Sage’s Pick: Listeners of our podcast will know that some of the T-G ‘cast are not always the most DLC friendly bunch, myself included. However this week I’m making an exception (it seems I’m making more exceptions to my anti-DLC standpoint lately; perhaps the quality of DLC is improving). Borderlands 2 has impressed me with its style, its story lines, and the creative stylings of Anthony Burch.  While it’s not the most complex of games, it is engaging and entertaining.  Given all that, I’m excited to see what the DLC looks like. And the price seems reasonable for the content, which thankfully seems to be a growing trend– perhaps video game companies finally heard all of the complaints about over-priced DLC.  At any rate, I’m looking forward to Sir Hammerlock this week.

Jeremy’s Pick: There is a perfect little storm brewing in the gaming world: Adventure games are back, you say? The horror genre has degraded into mere action thrill-rides, you say? Well ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Corpse Party series.  Corpse Party, which began as an indie project in Japan, was eventually published on several platforms including the PSP in late 2011. Everyone assumed it would be a one-off release, despite its cult popularity. As it happens, publisher XSEED specializes in cult hits, and has decided to bring the series back with Corpse Party: Book of Shadows next week. The game is heavily story-driven, extremely bloody, and allows players to make choices that, discernibly or otherwise, can have “grave” consequences for the protagonist characters’ final end. If mood, dialogue, gore, and Japanese horror have any interest to you, research a bit into Book of Shadows when it becomes available on PSN. Your good ending may rest on the decision.

  1. New Dante can die in a fire. Its been two years and he still looks like a male hooker not a badass to me.

  2. I’m waiting for Abercrombie & Fitch to bring out it’s spring DmC. I’ll pick up the game and clothes on clearance.

    • I’m not quite following all the hate for new Dante. As long as the game plays well, does it really matter what the main character looks like? Old Dante wasn’t exactly the greatest character design ever…

  3. Nothing for me this week. DmC demo was ok, but not worth $60. I think that’s why Capcom is juicing the deal with free DLC. They know it’s going to perform poorly.

I have a feeling Jeremy’s going to pick it though. If I remember correctly he gushed over Heavenly Sword. I remember because it’s one of those rare moments where I totally disagree with the guy.

  4. Before you go and buy Borderlands 2: Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt know that you have to have completed the main campaign. Hopefully, I save someone a few dollars.

  5. I’ll get Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is it’s $20 or less. Paying more than $20 for a PSP game seems wrong even if its super niche.

  6. I’m apathetic toward DmC: Devil May Cry, but I get a kick out of how irate gamers are. Reminds me of the ME3 ending.

  7. At BB, if you buy DmC for $60, you can get RE6 for $10. I’m thinking about that deal.

  8. Dante design doesn’t bother me. It’s DMC itself, which jumped the shark this gen.

  9. I was boycotting posting in the new release thread until Sage gave a pick. 😉

Seriously, you think DmC will be helped by having no real competition?

    • So does no pick (like NOLA and Jeremy) mean “this is all trash. I refused to put my good name next to anything?”

    • Aw Thanks Sektor! I actually think that it’s a mark of a lack of confidence in your game if you choose to release it when nothing else is coming out. Though this has been a rather dry year, it inspires competition and interest to release your game when at least a couple other big names are coming out. IMO.

      • I see that, but I also see so many games all released in two months of the year. I wish publishers would take a few more chances and mix things up.

  10. I don’t know if Jeremy picking Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is a good thing or the Deagle influence. Sean would never endorse spooky paper dolls. (or would he?)

  11. When did New Releases move from Friday to Wednesday?

  12. I saw Robert and Jeremy kissing Ninja Theory’s ass on twitter. Typical games journalizm. I expect at least a B from the review.

  13. I loved the first Corpse Party. Going to grab the sequel.

  14. Wait Disgaea is being released on PSN and Deagle didn’t pick it? The world’s going to end!

  15. SeanNOLA doesn’t pick anymore? What’s up with that?

  16. No price listed for Corpse Party: Book of Shadows, isn’t it a PSN exclusive as well?
