New Releases for the Week of August 21, 2011

Sure, this week’s new release list may lack quantity, but by sending players back to the Deus Ex, Shin Megami Tensei, and Street Fighter III realms, quality seems almost guaranteed. One element that also seems promising in this week’s selection of e-Shop titles (announced Thursday) After last week’s re-release of the lusterless Urban Champion, things can only get better.

Deus Ex Human Revolution

DesertEagle’s Pick: With my heart torn from seeing only four JRPG’s at E3 (with three of those from Atlus), the immediate future doesn’t look promising for Eastern role-playing enthusiasts. As such, my recommendation is for Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, especially for new 3DS owners who haven’t played the presumably underclocked DS original.

Samurage’s Pick: Although I lack a 3DS, Shin Megami Tensei looks promising. Although Deus Ex Human Revolution was a little underwhelming at E3, I’m hoping some last-minute tweaks took place.

BlueSwim Pick: Falling into the “hate” portion of my love-hate relationship with Capcom comes Street Fighter III: Third Strike: Online Edition. I respect this game, but I just don’t like it. On the PS2’s Street Fighter: Anniversary Collection, there was nothing for a solo player like me to do; a problem that I doubt this entry will fix. Also of note is that only Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and Akuma return from Street Fighter II. That aside, online fighting game fans who have never played Third Strike will want to give this beautifully animated Street Fighter a try. It’s an excellent technical fighting game, but the lack of character familiarity or a purpose to keep playing was too much for me to get over.

  1. Deus Ex Human Revolution is out already? I almost forgot about that… How are the reviews?

  2. SFIII price, please.

  3. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survior Overclocked. Did you play the original one, Deagle? I’t great and super long.

  4. I’m hoping that Deus Ex Human Revolution is good, but something tells me it won’t watch the intesnity of the first game.

  5. I’ve tried the SMT games, but they are a bit too talky for me.

  6. I’m hoping that Deus Ex: HR rox my sox.

  7. Next week is Madden 12, I can hold out until then.

  8. SMT Overclocked. And yes, I have the original DS game, but I can’t wait to see what this version looks (and sounds) like.

  9. Capcom and its sequels/remakes- they always seem to get my money.

  10. Deus Ex Human Revolution, just the regular edition.

  11. Deagle, how do you feel about Xenoblade, Last Story, and Pandora’s Tower not coming here?

    • Ultimately, it’s Nintendo decision. Since JRPGs are becoming a niche market (and I don’t know many fans of the genre are up for a Wii game) the company probably wanted to pool their resources for something like Skyward Sword.

Still, Xenoblade Chronicles’s absence is the US is a bit puzzling, since they already did the English voicework for the EU version. It should have cost too much to push this one out. Considering the review scores, it’s a bit tragic.

    • I would have liked it if they were Club Nintendo rewards. They can’t cost much more to manufacture than the Game & Watch Ball game was.

  12. Street Fighter III: Third Strike: Online Edition

You know a company is starting to milk it when a single colon won’t do it anymore.

  13. No picks from Blue?

  14. eternal nightmare

    Devil Survivor Overclocked

  15. Deus Ex Human Revolution this week. I hope Sage was right and it plays better.

  17. Deus Ex is going to be awesome!

  18. I never heard of Call of Atlantis. Let me guess
match 3 puzzler? That’s all the DS seems to get these days.

    • Yeah the last podcast wasn’t joking when they said the future of the DS was limited. There’s NOTHING coming out that I’m interested in.

  19. Just picked up SMT:DSO. I can’t wait to play.

  20. For the record, Deus ex three looks MUCH better than when I saw it. I think maybe it’s worth getting now. Looks sage-worthy, anyway.
