New Releases for the Week of April 10th-16th, 2013

Injustice Gods Among UsWith two titles that were denied a stateside release (Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers and Pandora’s Tower), a few of this week’s new releases demonstrates a critical shift in gaming. Hopefully, both titles will receive enough critical and commercial success to demonstrate the viability of similar efforts. Although geared toward the mainstream with a roster of DC Comic favorites, Injustice: Gods Among Us also offers a backstory marked by improbability. NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind the titles, rose from the ashes of now-defunct Midway Games, acquiring key properties while retaining many of the employees that were instrumental in the construction of critical and commercial hits.

Robert’s Pick: It looks like the JRPGs are smiling radiantly, as both Pandora’s Tower and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers are hitting store shelves this week. While I appreciate Operation Rainfall’s and XSEED’s efforts to bring Ganbarion’s title stateside, Ive heard that Pandora is a solid, if not compulsory experience. Alternatively, the wait for Soul Hackers has been exceedingly long, after SCEA nixed a Western release back in 2000. Following tradition, Atlus has given the title a pleasing upgrade in the caesura, reducing load times, adding new demons, a opening cinematic, and full voice acting, as well as a slew of new animations. This week, I’ll be taking time out to mount a campaign with the ‘spookies’.

Eric’s Pick: If there’s one kind of DLC I love (besides skimpy costumes for the ladies of DOA5), it’s free DLC. This week, Forza Horizon gets a sizable piece of free downloadable goodness in the form of the 1,000 Club Expansion Pack. The content included is nothing to sneeze at, either. The 1,000 Club sports a pair of new cars, ten new achievements, and 1,000 new challenges spread out over every retail and DLC ride Horizon has to offer. Also, the Soul Sacrifice demo comes out this week for the PS Vita. I’m looking forward to sitting down with that, as well.

Jeremy’s Pick: Dillon’s Rolling Western may be the closest thing to a well-publicized breakout hit for the 3DS eShop. The western- anthropomorphic-themed tower defense game got a fair amount of attention at the time, but I wouldn’t have guessed a sequel would ever happen. Dillon shares DNA with other 3D action tower defense games like Orcs Must Die, Dungeon Defenders, or Iron Brigade, but trades on a cute-cowboy-animal aesthetic and a platform that offers nothing else quite like it. Although pre-release info is scant, The Last Ranger will add recruitment of allies and possibly a few other features beyond the original, but the core ideas of the brand haven’t grown cold yet.
