New Game Releases: August 8th-14th, 2014

Disgaea 4 A Promise Revisited (0)

From Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed’s clothes-shredding capers to Surgeon Simulator 2013’s high-tech update on the classic board game, Operation, this week’s roster of new releases offers a number of offbeat titles for gamers to enjoy. Unsurprisingly, Sony Santa Monica’s latest game falls into the unconventional camp. Hohokum puts players in control of a kite-like entity who sails through a number of vibrantly-hued environments, where experimentation rather than inflexible objectives appear to be the driving force.

Robert’s Pick: For the last two months, Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited has been persistently locked in my PS Vita’s cartridge slot, its engrossing gameplay causing me to reject any new rivals. Sure, I played through D4 when it was released on the PlayStation 3 back in 2011, but Revisited also contains all the downloadable content I was far to frugal to purchase, as well as a generous amount of new content that’s sure to please series fans. For any role-playing fan who’s been contemplating a purchase of Sony’s portable, Nippon Ichi’s substantial port could very well be the tipping point.

Gonçalo’s Pick:
This week’s obvious choice would Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited for Sony’s PS Vita, a title every tactics aficionado should play. However, the retro gamer in me can’t help but to gawk at the Wii-U re-release of Cybernator. Originally launched for Nintendo’s 16-bit console, this Assault Suit Leynos spin-off is arguably the strongest title of its time in the saga.

Featuring a massive scale and attention to detail, your huge mech would often seem tiny when compared to the game’s immense enemies. Despite being a 2D side-scroller, it played like a mix of simulation and arcade, the action was frantic, chaotic and over-the-top, but all of your movements were slow and required a measured approach due to your mech’s weight. Although the formula improved with later 32-bit releases, Cybernator is a very worthy purchase for all giant robot loving Wii-U owners.

  1. LOL! It looks like Tech-Gaming is unofficially celebrating Disgaea week! Prinny pudding for everyone!

  2. Hohokum looks like a perfect candidate for free on PS+ in 3 months.

  3. Debating whether to pick up Akiba Trip on PS3 or Vita. Or just to wait for the PS4 version.

  4. If Surgeon Simulator 2013 supports the Move controller, I’m all in.

“Nurse, fetch my scrubs and make haste with my scalpel!”

  5. Cybernator was one of my favorite SNES games, I’m so ready to play it on my Wii U.

Hows SNES emulation on the Wii U?

  6. Is DCS: F-86F Sabre supposed to be any good? Can anyone recommend a good modern flight sim for me?

  7. I’m a bit interested in Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed. Ok, maybe a little more than a bit.

  8. I’m considering Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited. Maybe if I can find a limited edition.

  9. Mega Coin Squad look pretty fun. I like the Adult Swim games.

  10. A Disgaea 4 giveaway would be really awesome! I’d love to play the Vita version.

  11. Hasn’t King’s Bounty: Dark Side been out for some time?

  12. I’ll be getting the digital version of D4.

  13. I read one review for Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed and it was pretty badly written. When will your review go live? Or can you tell me if it’s worth buying?

  14. I think DEagle’s statements are apocryphal: “I was too frugal to purchase DLC for a game in my favorite franchise”. I mean if He’s not gonna pay for it, then who will? I mean, I’m not really one of those “DLC is the devil” kinds of guys, but thinking back, I haven’t really bought much either.

    • I just said “I mean” twice in rapid succession.

It happened: I’ve started writing like a 15-year-old again.

    • I won’t defend I “I’ll never buy DLC” set, but isn’t there more than enough content in the game to keep people busy for 100+ hours?
