New Game Releases: Sept. 28-Oct. 4th, 2017

Remember the concern that the Nintendo Switch’s post-launch months would mimic the Wii U and have a scarcity of software? This week those worries should be put to rest, as the platform hosts seventeen different offering. Sure, they’re not all winners, but with choices like FIFA 18, Golf Story, Picross S, and an adept port of One Piece Unlimited World Red, there are definitely some tempting titles. Satisfyingly, it’s not just Nintendo owners who luck out, with games like Forza Motorsport 7, Cuphead, and Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters speeding to store shelves and digital marketplaces.

Robert’s Pick: With titles like Forza Motorsport 7, Cuphead, and Golf Story all arriving this week, there’s are quite a few games to get excited about. That said, Culdcept Revolt might make for an unlikely pick against a onslaught of high-profile titles. But previous iterations in the franchise, from the 2003 localization of Culdcept Second (simply titled Culdcept in the US) and 2008’s Culdcept Saga hooked me on OmiyaSoft’s series. Blending Monopoly-like game boards, and Magic the Gathering’s card-based creatures, the game is accessible while retaining the type of nuance that supports long-term play. After growing accustomed to playing Culdcept on the bigger screen, I was originally worried that the 3DS iteration would be a compromise. But with sixty-frame-per-second delivery and decks, boards, and avatars that aren’t too tiny, there’s little reason for concern.
