New Game Releases: September 17th-23rd, 2015

Assault Android Cactus

From an abundance of Skylander SuperCharger SKUS to free downloadable content for Shovel Knight owners, this week’s schedule of new game releases has a number of treats in store. What’s most interesting is support for legacy consoles. Not only do the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii get an iteration of SuperChargers, but next week sees the release of Ghost Blade for the Dreamcast, offering at least one hoorah for SEGA’s beloved hardware.

Robert’s Pick: Given the uninterrupted success of the Skylanders franchise, I have no doubt that SuperChargers will be another compelling chapter, luring gamers to stores in search of starter sets, figurines, and vehicles. But between runs to the retail, don’t ignore a fine collection of shmups that are hitting Steam this week. From Mommy’s Best quartet of trigger-happy fulfilment (Explosionade, Game Type, Shoot 1UP and Weapon of Choice) to Eschatos’ bullet-hell beauty, monitors are poised to receive a healthy pixel workout.

Shoot 1Up
Gonçalo’s Pick: The Xbox 360 re-ignited my love affair with SHMUPs when I first layed hands on Deathsmiles. That flame has only burned brighter even since and seeing this genre being represented on Steam will likely be quite the drain on my wallet. Moreover, we westerners finally have the opportunity to play Eschatos, a SHMUP which was previously Japan-exclusive. If you enjoy this classic genre you owe to yourself to give Eschatos a spin.

  1. I’m grabbing the Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows DLC for Vita. So cool to see free content.

    (There’s no catch, right?)

  2. Skylanders: SuperChargers is coming out?

It’s that time of year to bond with my family. It the one game that everyone seems to like.

  3. I love the idea of a breast milk shooter. But what the name of the game in the bottom pic?

  4. I’d love to see a Skylanders: SuperChargers starter pack review from you this week.

  5. I’m thinking about getting Extreme Exorcism. Looks like a cool little indie game.

  6. That 59 cent Steam game is kind of tempting.

  7. I loved Car Battler Joe.

  8. So the Plague of Shadows DLC is out?

I can’t wait for a Shovel Knight Amiibo!

  9. Assault Android Cactus characters are kind of creepy. I realize what look they’re going for, but somethings off And its freaking me out.

  10. Thought I’d keep it going:

Release that best describes my sex life: Shoot 1UP

  11. Pumped BMX+ is a mobile port that looks the part. I really hope it’s not more than $5.

  12. WTF. You forgot FIFA 16!!!

  13. I’m confused what did people expect from Taken King? A completely new game? Thats not how mmo-style games work.

  14. Assault Android Cactus all the way! And yes I dig that art style.

  15. There are FOUR “Ty The Tasmanian Tiger” games?!

    • The last one, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 3: Night of the Quinkan came out 10 years ago.

Now here’s the crazy thing, Ty The Tasmanian Tiger 4 is pretty good. Its a 2D side scroller using sprites. Not of that dumb Polygon stuff. It’s not innovative but it is fun, and less than $6, which is the proper price point.

Tembo the Badass Elephant, are you listening?
