New Game Releases: August 29th-September 4th, 2014

Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate

September can be a strange month, where part of the country experiences triple-digit heat while a shifting polar vortex blows icy air through the Northeast. Beyond weird weather patterns, the month also sees a number of unusual new release patterns, such as the Wii U and PS Vita receiving the bulk of titles. Sure, there’s a noticeable amount of chaffs in there- Donkey Kong Jr. Math stands out as a particularly curious Virtual Console selection, but there’s also a number of notable titles. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is a follow-up to last year’s successful murder-mystery game, while SteamWorld Dig brings Image & Form’s Splunky-vania action onto the Wii U’s GamePad.

Robert’s Pick: While both Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate have been vying for my commute time attention, I have to give the nod to one of my favorite indie titles of last year: SteamWorld Dig. Across the 3DS and PC platforms, I’ve sunk countless hours burrowing into its recesses, gradually perfecting my digging techniques through the game’s procedurally generated mines. A near-flawless fusion of exploration, simulation, action, and discovery, Wii U should be able to mine a few weeks of enjoyment from the reasonably priced download.

Gonçalo’s Pick: I’ve always enjoyed the Dynasty Warriors and Warriors Orochi series. There aren’t many games that offer a similar scope or sheer number of enemies in a single level as these titles. With that said, my interest in Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate can be attributed to something much more basic and dare I say cheap; Ryu Hayabusa, Ayane and Kasumi are in it. I fully admit this is possibly one of the worst reasons to want to play the game, but sometimes fan service speaks louder.

  1. I’ll pick up all the free PS+ games. Man, I’m loving the service, get $6 a month I’ve ever spent. I had Xbox Live for years and didn’t get anything beside the ability to play MP from them.

  2. Seems there’s so many Japanese games coming out right now!!!

  3. I thought Hatoful Boyfriend came out last week.

Also, I think Velocity 2X is going to free for PS+ers on PS4.

  4. Sometimes I look at Giant Bomb’s new releases. They have Stronghold Crusader 2 coming out this week.

  5. Wait, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney came out already? Why did no one hype this game up? It’s Layton and Wright for the love of all things holy!!!!!!!

  6. Robert does weather reports now? heehee.

Isn’t that a very Japanese thing to begin a letter by talking about the weather or seasons?

  7. I hope you review Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate this week.

  8. I played so much Nobunaga’s Ambition as a kid. Total flashback seeing that on the VC. Might even pick it up to see how far we’ve come.

  9. This is how we though 2010 would look in 1990:

    Needs way more Ed Hardy

  10. Velocity 2X is pretty good, you guys. Frustrating, but good…
