Wolfenstein The Old Blood (1)

From Paper Mario, the beloved plumber’s second foray into the realm role-playing to B.J. Blazkowicz’ Nazi-blasting return in Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, this week’s schedule of new releases offers a homecoming for cherished characters. Similarly, amiibo tap: Nintendo’s Greatest Bits looks to nurture a bit of nostalgia, offering short gameplay clips when Wii U owners pass their Amiibos close to the Gamepad’s NFC reader.

Robert’s Pick: Make no mistake, the first-person shooter can be an amazingly engaging genre. All too often, I’ve often found immersed in its gameplay, hands aching from gripping the controller with vice-like tautness for hours at a time. But in the last few years, FPS has succumbed to stagnancy, with a few too many linear, homogeneous entries diluting the power of the ballistic battles.

But Wolfenstein: The New Order was something different. Instead of depicting another mundane military shooter set in the near-future, the title took us to the past, with a wonderfully outlandish plot where the Nazis had won the war and established a moon base. It’s also shirked convention, offering characters worth caring about and a concentration on a single-player campaign. This week The Old Blood lets players step back into the boots of William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, which might initially sound superfluous. But in an era in which each successive entry in the Battlefield and Call of Duty franchises feel familiar, developer MachineGames returns the genre to its roots, with a standalone title that reminds players of the power of the FPS.

Gonçalo’s Pick: It’s always a nice surprise when a Kickstarter-funded project you’ve been keeping your eye on for a while is finally launched. This is the case with Chroma Squad, a tactical RPG tasking the player with running their own Power Rangers/ Super Sentai team. This includes hiring actors, purchasing equipment, filming episodes, seasons and even fighting the monster of the week. Of course, the real question is: when will we see a game where we play as Rita Repulsa and Lord Zed?
