New Game Releases: January 3rd-9th, 2014

Super Punch Out!!

Last week’s post-holiday eShop rush was unexpectedly intense, besieging Nintendo’s servers and taking the digital service offline for several days. As such, the company’s selection of weekly releases might look familiar- many of the games were scheduled for last week’s update. One notable postponement is the release of Pokémon Bank, which was originally slated for stateside release on December 27th. Unfortunately, Nintendo hasn’t announced a new date, but has assured Pokéholics that the service is still coming.

Robert’s Pick: While Wii Fit U has a few underdeveloped elements, it’s still a thoroughly enjoyable product that deftly combines activity and amusement. A retail bundle that includes the Wii Balance Board, a Fit Meter, and a disc-based copy of the title will cost $90, while those who still have their Balance Board laying around can purchase a package that includes the game and pedometer peripheral for $50. However, for budding athletes interested in saving some coin- there’s a way to obtain Wii Fit U for far less. Download the demo before January 31st, and purchase a standalone Fit Meter- this act will unlock the full game. Gamers who don’t have a Balance Board should be able to find a used one for about $10. Whichever path you take, just be sure to try the Core Luge. It’s a mini-game that looks innocuous but is a surprisingly effective abdominal workout.

Gonçalo’s Pick: I first saw Consortium about a year ago on Steam Greenlight, and I remember thinking it had immense potential for something truly unique. The game could be best described as a smaller, less violent and more open-ended Deus Ex set in space. I was especially surprised when the developers openly stated you could play through the entire game without firing a single shot, something I wouldn’t mind seeing more of in RPGs.

  1. Such a slow week, you had to go old school for the artwork?

  2. Ok, I’m starting to feel the PS4 drought. Played and finished Killzone, CoD, Lego Marvel, And AssCred. Almost bought Knack, that’s how desperate I am.

    • Yep, for next-gen you’re going to have to wait a few months for develop to get cooking.

    • I could be mistaken, but I hear Knack actually has a pretty solid fanbase, I’m pretty interested in it myself. I wouldn’t be mistaken if a few years from now it became one of those “underrated gems” people like to ask about.

      • If you like old school games then you will probably like it. I think people expected a super advanced game that showed off every feature of the PS4.

        • Hah, I love old-school games, been playing Streets of Rage since last week, time well spent.

          • Have you played the second one? Really great sequel.

          • Yes I did, I own Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis collection, the sequel is better in almost every regard. I think the only point they scaled back was the number of enemies on screen. I can’t be sure but I think it went from 10 to 8, but I could be wrong here.

  3. Is there a way to download Wii Fit U on PC if you don’t have a Wii U?

  4. I’d love to play Super Punch-Out!! again (and even the first game) but $7.99 is a bit expensive. Nintendo needs to drop those prices.

  5. I need to pick up CastleStorm. I’ll probably opt for the Sony version because of cross-buy.

  6. So Bird Mania Christmas 3D two weeks after Christmas?

    Nice job, Nintendo.

    • Well, it’s not really their fault if everyone rushed online at the same time.

I do feel bad for the developer. They’re going to sell no copies.

  7. Thanks for the Wii Fit U tip. Downloading the demo now. Just have to find one of the meters and dust of the board.

  8. Thanks for the Wii Fit U review. I must have missed that one.

  9. Nothing for me this week.

  10. Street of Rage still kicks ass.

  11. Whats the next big PS4 release? Im itching for a new games.

  12. Dr. Luigi is priced a bit high.

  13. Secrets of Rætikon for me.
