Are You Ready for Some Football? Tech-Gaming Previews Madden 09

It’s been two decades since John Madden Football first
appeared on Apple II computers. While we didn’t jump aboard the Madden Bus
until the game’s first console release in 1990, we’ve followed the popular franchise
ever since.  From the peaks- once the development
teams got to know the hardware, to the reduced-framerate valleys of last year’s
PS3 game, we’ve observed it all. This year, EA has promised us both consoles
will be running at a rock-solid 60 frames per second, and will include 85
improvements over last year’s game.  But will
game offer enough improvements to justify the $60-$110 price of admission?

The first time you boot the game, you will be given an
assessment of your Madden IQ- Your play will be evaluated in twelve different
areas, from passing, running, throwing , and tackling. After this brief
evaluation, the game’s AI will be adjusted to your skill level. Perhaps this
new addition is part of EA Sports honcho Peter Moore’s goal to make the
franchise accessible to a wider audience.

While golfers may be familiar with the concept of a
‘mulligan’; many football fans may not. Madden 09’s rewind system allows
players the ability to retry a play without punishment. Miss a kick through the
uprights, and you can now do what Scott Norwood still dreams about- getting a
second chance. Of course, football purists will want to turn this option off.

This year, the game will attempt to continue its effort to
replicate a TV presentation. Shots from outside and above the stadium will be
intercut between quarters, while real weather effects will be added. Players
will now see snow accumulate along the sidelines, as well as footprints left by
backpedaling quarterbacks. Cris Collingsworth and Tom Hammond of the NFL
Network will be replacing Larry O’Brien on commentary.

Only gamers that purchase the ninety dollar special edition,
will be able to enjoy the updated version of NFL Head Coach. Although most fans
and critics were lukewarm about the 2006 Xbox/PS2 title, players will now be
able to create their own plays in Coach and import them into Madden 09. The
collector’s edition will also include an emulated version of Madden ’93 with
updated roosters.  We were always partial
to ’92, if only for the homicidal ambulances.

Additionally, for players who plunk down fifteen dollars on
the Marketplace or PSN to host a fantasy draft league, players will be able to
import their teams into the 360/PS3 versions of Madden 09. Budding sports
statisticians will be able to manage all drafting, trades, and seasonal tracking
duties. Electronic Arts will squeeze an extra five dollars out of players who
requite instantaneous statistical updates on gamedays.

Public reception of last year’s entry in the perennial Madden
series was disappointing-sales dropped about 40% from the previous year. This
season, EA Sports looks to increase the revenue by offering multiple ways of
hitting the player in the pocketbook. We hope to find out if these new
additions are worth the extra cost before gameday, August 12th.

About Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

  1. Wow, $105 bucks for the complete Madden package. I think they do this to make the $60 version look cheap.

  2. Monopolies suck.

  3. $90 for a collector’s edition. Bite me.

  4. Why is a retired guy playing?

  5. $30 more for a lame game no one liked and a old genesis game. HAHAHA!

    Peter Moore you’re a genius!

  6. I’m not ready and never will be at those prices.

  7. I can’t believe they turn out the same game year after year with rooster updates…

    And I still buy it.

    Thanks, TG.

  8. Football games are boring.

  9. Good preview, I think I’ll pass and buy Madden 08 when it hits 30 bucks.

  10. Bring back the 2K Games! Remeber when Madden was selling for $50 and they were $20! Good time.

  11. Only a fool would pay $105 for everything. Most people wouldn’t even think about it.

  12. $90+$15+5=$110. Right?

  13. Funny video!

  14. You’re right, thanks Squall.

Now, if you don’t mind, I must get back to my remedial math class.

  15. They always show a great looking pic for the new Madden, and when you play the game it looks like a HD version of ’94 most of the time.

No way does the play look like that pic. Replay maybe, but not gameplay.

  16. there’s always cheerleading for ya 😉

  17. I’ll get this game, like I do every year. I probably won’t get the $90 version, tho.

  18. The EA money machine creaks forward

  19. Corrected-

    Sports games are boring.

  20. You’d think with the ESPN, Reebok, and other product placement, EA wouldn’t have to sell the game for so much.

  21. I couldn’t imagine August without a new copy of Madden.

  22. No NCAA preview. Isn’t that coming out next month?

  23. Exactly!

Preseason and Madden. It’s what I look forward to every year.

  24. DiscipleInAgony

Uh, sports games are always interesting.

Every game is different, not like video games where X jumps out at you every time in the same place.

  25. The ‘improvements’ sound lame at best. Madden IQ and instant replay? crap.

  26. Just wait on the collector’s edition; it will drop quickly enough.

  27. I’m surprised they don’t charge you to unlock Farve.

  28. They emulate Madden 93? Is that a joke? What kind of incentive is that?

  29. Madden hasn’t made any really significant changes (except graphically) since about 2001.

  30. I’ll stick with the regular edition- maybe circuitcity will give a $10 gift card like they usually do.

  31. you want to know how I feel about Madden? Mah! Buy it for 60, sell it a few months later for 10, then buy again.

I helped make EA sports the giant they are today

  32. Still happy with Madden 05 for PS2, thankyouverymuchsir.

  33. It must be hard to work on the Madden team, and sit around and ask, “what can we do to get $60 out of gamers this year?”

  34. I try to buy the game every two years or so.

  35. Are after football season ends, the price always drops. Quick drops on used prices too.

  36. I bet you could buy every copy of Madden from 90-08 for about $110. Everything to ’05 is about 2 bucks.

  37. lol’ed at the Scott Norwood mention.

  38. I’m waiting for NCAA Football 09.

  39. Cool preview.

  40. a 40% drop in sales. Damn.

  41. August 12th, here I come.

  42. Madden IQ sounds like a cheap addition to pad the bullet list on the back of the box.

  43. Same game, slightly different name.

  44. I can’t belive this game is still popular after so many years.

  45. If it is 60 fps on PS3, I’ll pick it up.

  46. Yes, football season can get here soon enough. Go PATS!

  47. As I cheer you on playing your boring sportsgame I’ll be busy on GTA.
